In 1998 Prada opened their first shop in Los Angeles, opening up the US market for the company. Boutiques in Manhattan and Las Vegas soon followed as well as her side line, Mui Mui’s first North American boutique in Los Angeles. Now a true worldwide entity with a shop in nearly every western city, Prada truly became a fashion empire.

In the 90’s, Prada made a series of acquisitions, as many fashion houses did at the time, taking on Fendi, who was floundering somewhat financially. They also obtained Helmut Lang, Church Shoes, and in 2000, took over the house of Jil Sander. In 2001, they acquired Byblos, only to sell it in early 2002 after also selling off Fendi, leading some to speculate that Prada might have been having cash problems.

Today Prada still occupies a pinnacle position in the fashion world, with Prada handbags and shoes at the top of the industry. Sought after from every corner of the world, Prada handbags represent the epitome of style and luxury.

Style

One of the classic features of a Prada garment or bag has always been its fabrics. Always of the highest quality, Muiccia tended to follow her utilitarian philosophies and employed a lot of nylon, polyester and other synthetic fabrics. Her designs tended towards deconstructed and simple pieces, following neither a particular style or defining element. There is no ‘fashion for fashion’s sake’ with the Prada line. Prada seems to take an intellectual approach to fashion, avoiding the flash and glitz that prevail in some arenas for clean, utilitarian nerd-chic.

Handbags

There are some notable items within the already notable Prada handbag line. The Nylon Hobo Bag from Prada Sports collection is an excellent example of form and function. Constructed from white nylon and a grey woven trim with orange mesh inserts and silver accents, the bag is all understated style and class.

The Prada Leather Tobacco Handbag, constructed, of course, in tobacco colored, top quality full grain calfskin leather has accent stitching and elegantly lined in dark brown monogram fabric. Double leather straps and polished silver hardware finish off the classic urban styling of this sharp handbag.
